The tips deduction isn't automatic. You claim it when you file, on Schedule 1-A, and it only counts tips that have been reported. Here's the process for a 2026 return (filed in early 2027).
Step by step
- Check that your job qualifies. It must be on the Treasury's list of occupations that customarily received tips, and the tips must be voluntary.
- Gather your tip records. For employees, 2026 W-2s report qualified tips in box 12 with code TP, along with your tipped occupation code. Self-employed workers get tip amounts on Forms 1099 or keep their own records.
- Report any cash tips you didn't report to your employer on Form 4137. Unreported tips can't be deducted, and you'll owe Social Security and Medicare on them either way.
- Fill in Part II of Schedule 1-A. Enter your qualified tips, apply the $25,000 cap, then the phase-out if your modified AGI is over $150,000 ($300,000 joint).
- Carry the Schedule 1-A total to Form 1040. It lowers your taxable income. You can still take the standard deduction.
- Include your Social Security number (valid for work), and file jointly if you're married.
Check your number first
Before you file, run your W-2 figures through the tips calculator. If your estimate is far from what your tax software shows, look at the box 12 amount and your filing status first; those cause most differences.
Common mistakes
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Counting a mandatory service charge as a tip | It isn't voluntary, so it doesn't qualify | Only count tips the customer chose to give |
| Deducting unreported cash tips | Not allowed | Report them on Form 4137 first |
| Filing married-separately | The deduction is zero | File jointly to claim it |
| Two tipped spouses each claiming $25,000 | The cap is per return | Maximum $25,000 combined |
| Self-employed claiming more than profit | Limited to net income from that work | Use the self-employed option in the calculator |
| Expecting no Social Security or Medicare | Payroll taxes still apply | Plan for 7.65% (employees) or self-employment tax |
What if my W-2 has no code TP?
Ask your employer for a corrected W-2c. For tax year 2025, when employers weren't required to report tips separately, you could use box 7 (Social Security tips), your own records, or a separate statement from your employer.
Common questions
What form do I use to claim no tax on tips?
Schedule 1-A, which is attached to Form 1040. The total from Schedule 1-A lowers your taxable income.
Where are my qualified tips on my W-2?
From tax year 2026, in box 12 with code TP.
Can I claim tips I didn't report to my employer?
Only after you report them on Form 4137. Unreported tips can't be deducted.
