No tax on tips: how much will I actually save?

Six worked examples for tax year 2026, from a part-time server to a high-earning bartender.

By Rogger Taipe · Updated October 12, 2026 · Tax years 2025 and 2026 · Based on IRS guidance

Up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted on Schedule 1-A. What that's worth depends on your tax bracket and on how much tax you owed in the first place. These examples use the same engine as the tips calculator, for tax year 2026 with the standard deduction and no credits.

WorkerIncome (AGI)Qualified tipsDeductionFederal tax saved
Server, single$40,000$22,000$22,000$2,430
Bartender, single$65,000$35,000$25,000 (cap)$3,000
Hairstylist, head of household$48,000$9,000$9,000$1,023
Server married to a salaried spouse, joint$108,000$18,000$18,000$2,160
Part-time server, single$24,000$10,000$10,000$790
Bartender, single, high income$180,000$25,000$22,000$5,280

What the examples show

Low tax bills limit the saving

The part-time server only owed $790 of federal income tax before the deduction. A $10,000 deduction wipes it out, but it can't go below zero, so the saving is $790, not $1,000. The deduction doesn't create a refund on its own; refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit work separately.

The $25,000 cap is per return

The bartender received $35,000 in tips but can deduct only $25,000. Married couples who both earn tips share the same $25,000 cap on a joint return.

High earners lose a little, not all

At $180,000 of income, the bartender is $30,000 over the $150,000 threshold. The deduction drops $100 for each full $1,000: 30 × $100 = $3,000, leaving $22,000. Because the bartender is in the 24% bracket, that still saves $5,280. A single filer loses the whole deduction at $400,000.

Married couples must file jointly

The server in example 4 saves $2,160 on a joint return. If the couple filed separately, the tips deduction would be zero. See married filing separately and the new deductions.

Before you count on it

  • Your job must be on the Treasury's list of occupations that customarily received tips.
  • Tips must be voluntary. Automatic service charges don't count.
  • Tips must be reported: on your W-2 (box 12, code TP from 2026), a Form 1099, or Form 4137.
  • Social Security and Medicare tax still apply to tips, and state income tax may too.

Common questions

Are tips tax-free in 2026?

Not fully. Up to $25,000 of qualified tips can be deducted from federal taxable income. Tips still count for Social Security and Medicare, and states may tax them.

How much does $10,000 in tips save?

Usually $1,000 in the 10% bracket, $1,200 in the 12% bracket and $2,200 in the 22% bracket, but never more than the federal income tax you owed.

Do cash tips count?

Yes, if they're voluntary and you report them to your employer or on Form 4137. Unreported cash tips can't be deducted.
